Red Car founder Carroll Kemp has since moved on to Alma Fria, but he made a number of stellar wines in 2015. The Pinots in particular are some of the very best wines I have tasted from Red Car. I found the 2015 whites far less interesting. All of those wines, in my opinion, lack depth and site character to a degree that suggests the fruit was picked too early. The Syrahs, from the 2014 harvest, are solid across the board. As always, the Red Car wines sit on the more restrained side of the style spectrum. Although whole clusters are used sparingly, many of the wines have a distinctive savory character.

I was quite impressed with the wines I tasted at Red Car this year, especially the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. At times, I have found the Red Car offerings a bit light, even within the context of wines that are made with a preference towards picking on the early side. I saw little of that this year. The Syrahs, on the other hand, are both too austere in my view, while the Cabernet is solid, especially for a debut release.

The 2013 Chardonnays are the highlights in this range from Red Car and proprietor Carroll Kemp, while the Pinots are more variable, which essentially reflects the personality and overall quality of the vintage. In my view, the Syrahs remain works in progress. A new Cabernet Sauvignon rounds out the range. The Red Car style is built on restraint that is the result of picking early and working with sites where maturity can be achieved at lower sugars. Also tasted: 2013 Syrah Estate, 2013 Syrah Vivio.
