The collection of wines here continues to expand into mostly unexplored territory (blaufrankisch, anyone?) and Pax Mahle said he finds that working with a wide range of varieties stimulates his creative urges, "which keeps things vital and interesting." The slow growing season of 2010 meant that ripening was especially protracted in the cool vineyards that Mahle favors. Some welcome heat spikes in late August and early September helped to spur ripeness, he said, but weren't so strong as to make sugars race ahead.
