“It was dry and warm with a lot of rain in June throughout one week,” Nicolas Rossignol tells me at the winery just opposite Denis Bachelet in Gevrey. “This recharged the vines and put them in condition for the picking that commenced on September 8. They needed time to reach maturity. It was a good year for quantity and quality. The berries were full but not shriveled. We used two-thirds whole bunch this year, and the Premier Crus will be bottled in December, the Vieilles Vignes and Grand Crus more like February and March.” It is not a bad line-up, but there are times when I feel that the wines would benefit from a bit more stuffing; perhaps the noble pursuit of “infusion” is taken just a little too far? Nice wines…I just want more presence. Nevertheless, readers should look for the Gevrey La Petite Chapelle that punches well above its weight.
