Paul Hobbs is at the top of his game. My recent tasting with Hobbs was truly unforgettable. The 2017s are really quite promising, especially within the context of the significant challenges that year. Pinot appears to have the upper hand over Chardonnay. I found a number of the Chardonnays to be quiet and reserved. Perhaps a slight lack of structure and depth explains Hobbs' decision to bottle some of the 2017s earlier than normal. After surveying all of Hobbs' 2016s, in other words all the Napa and Sonoma wines, I can only conclude that this is a stratospheric vintage here. Their 2016s are simply off the charts. There is not much more to it than that. Whereas most producers experienced condensed harvests, the 2017 fruit was brought over four weeks. By comparison, that number was closer to two weeks in 2016. In my view, though, the most significant evolution in this range, for both the Napa and Sonoma wines, is a continued transition to cooler, later-ripening sites.

This is a positively stellar set of wines from Paul Hobbs. Readers will find two new Pinots from the Sonoma Coast in 2016, and the first release of the Fraenkle-Cheshier Pinot in 2015.
