Justin Ennis continues to make compelling wines at Joseph Phelps' Freestone Sonoma Coast estate. As always, the wines are a bit on the richer side, but they nevertheless remain quite faithful to their origins. The 2015s, the Chardonnays in particular, are both very pretty, although they feel a bit riper than in the past. Of course, some of that may be attributable to the personality of the vintage.

Justin Ennis makes some of the most intense, powerful Pinots readers will find on the Sonoma Coast. As I have written here before, the Phelps Pinots are made in a style that is meant to appeal to the broader Joseph Phelps audience. That is not a criticism, just an observation of the style of wines readers should expect. Even so, the signatures of these sites and parcels come through loud and clear. Over the last few years Ennis has moved towards a greater use of larger format barrels. All of the Pinots are made with a small amount of stems, but whole clusters nuances aren't especially pronounced here. Instead, the wines are all about fruit and intensity and textured. The Quarter Moon Pinot is the most intensely mineral and savory wine in the range, but all of these Chardonnays and Pinots are distinctive and also representative of Freestone.
