Brothers Thierry and Jean-Pierre Usseglio are craftingx000D some of the richest wines of Chateauneuf du Pape, working with low-yielding oldx000D vines and carrying out long, extractive macerations (25 to 30 days for thex000D basic wine and 35 days for their Cuvee de Mon Aieul). The Usseglios bought a destemmer in time for the 2001x000D harvest: because of the hydric stressx000D in August and early September, they knew in advance that the stems would bex000D greener. Accordingly, they destemmedx000D their syrah 100%, then followed up by destemming the grenache as well. The result is a set of wines with finerx000D tannins than ever before.

"The 2000 vintage brought thicker skins than 1999," said Thierry Usseglio, "but '99 offers a fine balance of fruit, acidity and tannic structure. The wines are supple and sappy, and can be enjoyed early, even if they are built to age." The Usseglio brothers harvested late in 1999 for maximum ripeness, and this approach obviously paid off. This domain has climbed to the top rank of Chateauneuf producers in just the past few years, and the Cuvee de Mon Aieul bottling has been extraordinary since 1998.
