I tasted a wide range of Madeiras from Barbeito, including a stellar trio of wines from the 1800s. No, that is not a typo. Barbeito sources from a number of top properties across the island for this lineup of distinctive offerings that are described within the accompanying tasting notes. Interestingly, Barbeito, founded in 1946, is a relative newcomer to Madeira. The Barbeito family had the vision back then to snap up existing cellars of older vintages to build up their own stocks when there was very little interest for Madeira and now have an impressive library of their own wines. Today, Barbeito is run by Ricardo Freitas, the son of Manuela Barbeito.
