The 2016 Syrah Sonoma-Hillsides is without question the star among these new wines from Pax Wine Cellars. It is also one of the most profoundly beautiful California wines I have ever tasted. As always, the Pax wines are a bit richer than those Pax Mahle makes at his Wind Gap label, but much more restrained than they were at the outset.

This is a terrific set of wines from Pax Mahle's Pax Wine Cellars label. The wines are generally richer and more powerful in style than the wines Mahle makes under his Wind Gap label. Mahle attributes that mostly to the personality of specific sites and where they reach optimal ripeness as opposed to winemaking choices. Syrah forms the core of the range, but there is also plenty to like in some of the recent additions to the range, including the Chenin, Carignan and Gamay.
