Valdipiatta (which translates to flat Valley) is one of the leaders in organic practices and biodiversity in Montepulciano. Its vineyards run across the valley floor, dissected by a stream that runs from east to west. This location is especially favorable for its exposition to the sun, displaying the vines to sunlight from morning until night. The soils are primarily sandy, an alluvial terrace, with a mix of marine fossils found throughout and patches of heavy clay. Miriam Caporali learned her craft from her father and time spent working in Bordeaux before returning to Tuscany to manage the family winery. These days, she relies heavily on large format oak for her Vino Nobile (which is also 100% Sangiovese) and uses only about 20% tonneaux in the mix. The bigger wines, such as the Riserva and single-vineyard Vigna d'Alfiero, age in 20% new French oak (the balance in Slavonian oak), but the integration is expertly done. The 1998 Riserva was easily one of the highlights of my entire trip this year. As for the new vintages, the 2019 Vigna d'Alfiero, which hails from their oldest vineyard planted in the 1960s, is a big standout, with the 2018 Riserva showing the understated nature of the vintage. Sadly, most of our conversations on the visit focused on the devastating effects of rain in early 2023. At the time of our meeting in mid-July, Caporali was already aware that there wouldn’t be a Vino Nobile from 2023. Any red grapes that survived the attack of Downy mildew that plagued their vineyards would likely be used to make Rosé. Beyond the wines, the massive amount of rain also affected their fruit trees and olive groves.
