Few envied Oliver Haag when he took over the reins of this estate from his father in 2005. Although Wilhelm Haag is one of the grand old men of German wine and still casts a long shadow, his son has now stepped into the spotlight in his own right with a sensational collection of 2006s. I scored 13 wines higher than 90 points, and eight of them number among the finest rieslings produced in the vintage. The 2006 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese #14 is the best spatlese of the vintage, the long gold capsule auslese from the same site tied with the one from Clemens Busch for the same honor among the ausleses, and the TBA is the pinnacle of the vintage. No one in Germany did a better job in this vintage. (Rudi Wiest/Cellars International, Carlsbad, CA) Also recommended: 2006 Riesling Trocken (86), 2006 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spatlese Trocken (87), 2006 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese Trocken (89), 2006 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese #6 (92), 2006 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule (94), 2006 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule #13 (96).
