Staglin's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. I preferred it slightly over the 2016 for its greater freshness, clarity and better oak integration. Winemaker Fredrik Johansson used only pre-fire lots in the final blend, which along with a gentler approach in extraction, yields a Cabernet of terrific nuance. Staglin's 2017 is a very good example of the style of wine that a freakish year essentially forced on winemakers. I also continue to be impressed with the Chardonnay here. It's easily one of the best in Napa Valley.
