Renato Corino describes 2003 as a vintage in which the fruit was literally drying on the vine. Corino adds that the wines have the least amount of color he has ever seen. When the 2003s were made, the Corino brothers employed more French oak and higher toast levels than is the norm today. The 2003 Barolos were made when brothers Giuliano and Renato Corino were still working together. Giuliano kept the family's existing cellar, while Renato formed a new estate and label. Today, Giuliano makes the Giachini while Renato bottles the Arborina and Rocche. Both brothers release a Vecchie Vigne old-vine Barolo. Unsold bottles were divided along with the domaine, which means readers might see the Arborina, Rocche and Vecchie Vigne with either the Giovanni Corino label or the Renato Corino label. The wines are the same.

The 2003s are the first fin ished Barolos I have tasted since brothers Renato and Giuliano divided their family's holdings. Giuliano kept the old label and the family's estate name that readers are already familiar with. It will be interesting to see what the Corinos are capable of doing now that they are on their own. For now it is too soon to draw any meaningful conclusions, especially when faced with a vintage that is as atypical as 2003.
