Stefano Conterno is among the young producers who are revitalizing Barolo by bringing a ton of energy and enthusiasm. The wines are still works in progress, but the trajectory here continues to be quite positive. Conterno’s holdings are all in Monforte, where the wines can be quite bruising. My favorite wine in this range is the Monforte village Barolo, as it offers tons of character, but without the bruising tannins of some of the other wines. Readers who enjoy classically built Barolos will want to check out this small estate.

"It was a tough year in the vineyard," Stefano Conterno explained. "Rain was a constant, and that is especially hard on organic estates like ours. Many buds never fertilized because of the stress the plants suffered in 2017, so our yields were down. The wines saw 35-40 days on the skins, but without submerged cap maceration. Malos were all done in steel, and the wines were all racked into cask before the end of the year." As I have stated before, Diego Conterno is one of Piedmont's most exciting emerging estates. The Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba is a great place to start exploring these wines.
