There are a lot of highlights among these new releases from Wind Gap. As is often the case, I find the appellation level wines, the Pinot and Syrah in particular, quite distinctive. In 2016, Pax Mahle was especially selective. He did not bottle his Sonoma Coast or Woodruff Chardonnays, and only made one vineyard designate Pinot. Readers will find a ton to admire in the 2016 Syrahs, all of which are exceptionally beautiful and also super-expressive of site. At this level, that is what wine should be all about.

Readers will find many highlights in this set of new releases from Pax Mahle and Wind Gap. The freakishly low yields of 2015 resulted in unusually large, ample wines by Wind Gap standards. Yields were especially punishing in Syrah. Because of that, Mahle ultimately decided to bottle only one vineyard designated Syrah. The rest of the fruit went into the Sonoma Coast bottling. Both 2015 Syrahs are among the top wines of the year.
