Carl von Schubert's famed estate continues in transition, with long-time vineyard manager and cellarmaster Alfons Heinrich still actively consulting but preparing for retirement. I am delighted to report that the results here this year were vastly more stimulating and satisfying than in the previous three vintages. "It's true that many of the most successful wines were harvested early," says von Schubert, "but the fruit that managed to remain healthy through October turned into very high quality as well. "Acid levels this year are in the 8. 5 to 10 gram range but ripe and generally harmonious; the wines for the most part are clear and expressive. In contrast to many vintners this year, von Schubert's wines fermented relatively quickly and he judged many of them ready for bottling as early as March.
