La Monacesca is a family-run winery that manages to capture the richness and depths of flavor usually found from Jesi, with the minerality, acidic lift and captivating perfumes of their own region of Matelica. The current generation, Aldo Cifola, son of the original owner, oversees 33 hectares of vines, the majority of which are Verdicchio, yet some Sangiovese, Merlot, Chardonnay, and a tiny parcel of Syrah are planted as well. The winery is located in the Camertina valley, surrounded by the Monacesca contrada, names after a Benedictine monastery, that resides on the winery's property. The climate within the Camertina valley is much closer to Continental than Mediterranean, having little influence from the sea. The vineyards are situated at around 400 meters above sea level, with soils that are mineral-rich and clay-dominant, with marine fossils found throughout. The estate Verdicchio di Matelica is a beautiful introduction to the house style and the territory. The wines is sourced from 17 hectares of vines between the ages of 10 to 30 years old and is refined for only a few months on the lees in stainless steel. On the other hand, the Riserva Mirum hails from a three-hectare parcel of 30-year-old vines, and it refines for 18 months in stainless steel. Both are gorgeous expressions of variety and terroir. These are Verdicchios that are able to compete with the best whites of Italy.
