"The 2000 vintage brought thicker skins than 1999," said Thierry Usseglio, "but '99 offers a fine balance of fruit, acidity and tannic structure. The wines are supple and sappy, and can be enjoyed early, even if they are built to age." The Usseglio brothers harvested late in 1999 for maximum ripeness, and this approach obviously paid off. This domain has climbed to the top rank of Chateauneuf producers in just the past few years, and the Cuvee de Mon Aieul bottling has been extraordinary since 1998.

Thierry Usseglio is one of a minority of Chateauneuf du Pape growers who believes that 1999 offers even stronger potential than 1998. "Some parcels, especially those on the south side of the appellation, were damaged by the late August rain," said Usseglio, "but the rest gave powerful, deeply color raw material that even sturdier than that of 1998."
