The irrepressible Gyles Webb is still going strong, seemingly energized by all the cool-climate fruit he now owns in Elgin. The lowest altitude on his Stellenbosch estate is 372 meters above sea level, noted Webb, who offers a very broad range of wines, including Riesling and some of South Africa's best Merlots. ("Merlot sells here," he assured me when I asked him why growers bother with this variety in South Africa.) Long-time winemaker Rudi Schultz vinifies all of the reds with wild yeasts and inoculates the whites.

Incidentally, following the 2014 harvest Webb pulled out the Cabernet vineyard that produced his wine called The Mint. This firmly tannic, long-aging wine had always been controversial due to its pronounced sweet herb and mint character.
