This is a fabulous set of wines from the Martinellis, one of Sonoma's old-guard families. The 2015 Pinot Noirs in particular are special. Yields are down 30-50%, and while the wines are quite rich, they aren't heavy. The 2014 Syrahs are defined by their remarkable aromatic presence. The Martinellis have always made big, ripe wines. In recent years, the Martinellis have started picking at slightly lower sugar levels, which has resulted in wines with more aromatic intensity that still retain the richness and textural depth that readers who enjoy these wines have come to expect. But you will hear very little talk of winemaking here. The discussion at the table is all about sites, clones and farming, which is quite refreshing, to say the least.
