The 2002 and 2001 vintages produced wines of similar density, according to Bernard Schoffit, who described 2002 as "the best vintage for gewurztraminer here in 20 years, due to the firm acidity of the year."Still, as on some past visits, it was the richness and personality of Schoffit's numerous pinot gris bottlings that grabbed my attention.Incidentally, Schoffit, who has been unhappy with his muscat from the grand cru Rangen in the past few vintages (he feels that this wine lacks concentration in years with limited botrytis), will be replanting these vines with gewurztraminer.
