"I'm sure that you're hearing it from everybody so I don't want to be repetitive, but 2009 was pretty much a flawless vintage," Joel Peterson told me. What he particularly likes about the year is that "all of the varieties did well, very well actually, and we didn't need to compensate for any shortcomings." Peterson said that he felt no small degree of affirmation and satisfaction in the growing trend in California toward making wines from field blends of red grapes that emphasize site expression over a dominant varietal personality, "like it began here and has always been a priority." He added that he gets a personal thrill from watching his son Morgan's success with his Bedrock label, which features a number of such wines.
