Belle told me that 2001 and 2000 produced similarx000D styles of wine, although the 2001 crop was smaller by about 15% and richer inx000D grape sugars. The stems were ripe inx000D 2001, according to Belle, who did not destem any of his cuvees. Vintage 2000 is more flatteur,"x000D says Belle, "while 2001 is more rustic in a positive way." I asked Belle which vintages of his ownx000D wines he was currently drinking at home. His response: Anythingx000D from the 1990 to 1994 period; the '95s are still tannic and closed." Belle describes his 2000s as vins de plaisir that can be drunk early. He used a severe eclaircissage to keep his yields in Crozes-Hermitage below 40 hectoliters per hectare; sugar levels were quite healthy, and very little chaptalization was necessary. Incidentally, Belle was one of several growers in the Northern Rhone Valley who told me of very high sugar levels in '01, in his case almost as high as in '97.
