Benoit Tarlant is one of the most gifted growers in Champagne. Working with a handful of tiny parcel and cramped cellar, Tarlant crafts rich, vinous wines of true character. Sadly, these wines don't seem to get the recognition and exposure they deserve. At their best, though, Tarlant's Champagnes compete with the very best in the region.

Benoit Tarlant's wines are nearly impossible to find in the US, but I rarely miss a chance to drink them, as they are magnificent. One need to look no further than the 2003s to get a clear idea of Tarlant's sheer talent. And if readers are looking for true profoundness, the 2002 La Vigne d'Antan, which emerges from a site planted with own-rooted Chardonnay on sand, will do the trick. Simply put, these new releases from Benoit Tarlant are magnificent. Readers won't want to miss them.
