The 1999s from Cristal’s Vinothèque program are fascinating wines that blur the lines between Champagne and wine. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon spent a decade in various positions at Roederer before taking over as Chef de Caves that same year. The Vinothèques are tiny-release productions that start as the same blends as Cristal and Cristal Rosé, but bottled with a bit more pressure in anticipation of long aging in the Roederer cellars. Lécaillon gave the 1999s 8 years sur lattes (stored horizontally) followed by another 8.5 years sur pointe (stored nearly vertically and rotated every three months), prior to disgorging the wines in 2016. Dosage was 7-8 grams, about two liters lower than for the first release. These are very strong Champagnes for a challenging vintage with low acids and mid-weight concentration that was the result of heavy rains and bloated grapes.
