Aurélien Laherte continues to turn out some of the most compelling wines in all of Champagne. As always, the range here is quite vast, which makes singling out favorites next to impossible. All the wines are fermented in barrel with no malolactic fermentation, then bottled with very little dosage. It’s an approach that achieves a striking mix of textural richness and energy in Champagnes that bristle with varietal, site and vintage character. As good as the top wines are, I often find just as much pleasure in the entry-level offerings for their quality and value.

It’s always a pleasure to taste through this wide range from Laherte, as the wines encompass so many of the dimensions that make Champagne such a dynamic region today. Aurélien Laherte is among the most progressive of the young growers of his generation. I see a relentless drive to experiment with wines like the Petit Meslier/Pinot blend married to a deep respect for the past that emanates from some of the older-vine bottlings. The Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs remains one of my personal favorites for its quality and value. Readers will note the introduction of the Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Rouges Maisons, a new wine that replaces the Les Longues Voyes 1er in the range. Sustainable and regenerative farming in various guises and low-intervention winemaking are some of the signatures at this reference-point address.

There’s a lot to explore in these new releases from Laherte. Most of the wines are a bit softer than usual, which is probably a reflection of the warmer base vintages in many of the bottlings. What I admire most about these Champagnes is their purity and singularity of expression. Varietal and site character are always front and center. Organic/biodynamic farming and a minimalist approach in the cellar inform these wonderfully distinctive Champagnes. It’s next to impossible to choose favorites in this range.

Once again I was deeply impressed with Aurélien Laherte’s Champagnes. The range continues to grow, and yet each wine has a sense of purpose. Some are explorations of a single grape, others exalt the qualities of small parcels and then there are wines that showcase the principles of blending. All of these Champagnes share a feeling of vinous richness that is enhanced by aging in mostly neutral oak and low dosage. The Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs remains one of my favorites for its quality and price, but it’s pretty hard to go wrong with any of these Champagnes.

These Champagnes reinforce my strongly held view that Aurélien Laherte is one of the most talented vignerons of his generation in Champagne. The range this year is truly stellar. Some of the highlights include the Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs (2015 this year), a wine I often buy for my own cellar, the 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Grandes Crayères, which is new, and the (2014) Extra Brut Rosé de Saignée Les Baudiers. Readers who have not tasted these Champagnes owe it to themselves do so. Aurélien Laherte is young, passionate and humble. It is only a matter of time before he is recognized as one of Champagne's elite vignerons. As for the wines, they are spectacular.

This set of new releases from Aurélien Laherte is full of highlights. Vinification in neutral oak and low dosage seems to bring out the inherent natural richness of the sites Laherte works with. Although most of the wines are Pinot Noir or Meunier-based, Laherte is equally skilled with Chardonnay. His Blanc de Blancs is one of the most memorable wines I tasted this year. Readers will want to latch on to these wines before the obvious is widely known: Aurélien Laherte is one of the hottest growers in Champagne today.

Laherte Frères draws on a number of vineyards, many of them quite old, mostly on the southern edge of Epernay (the Côteaux Sud d'Epernay) and the Côte des Blancs for these super-distinctive wines. Most of the wines are fermented in barrel, with the malolactic fermentations partly blocked. Meunier plays a leading role in many of the wines. The estate bottles three Rosés, all of them compelling. Readers who have not tasted these wines owe it to themselves to do so, as they are terrific.

I found quite a bit to like in these new releases from Aurelien Laherte. The estate is best-known for their flagship Pinot Meunier Rosé, but there are a number of other wines in this range that are racy, exciting and well worth checking out. Laherte works with a handful of old-vine sites in the Côteaux sud d’Epernay, Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne. At their best, the Laherte Champagnes are rich and generous on the palate, with enveloping textures and notable resonance. The top wines are fermented and aged in barrel, which gently shapes some of the contours. Only the 2006 Brut Vintage is disappointing in this lineup.
