Vincent Laval was in high spirits when I stopped by this past March. The cellar was eerily empty, as Laval chose to bottle his 2018s earlier than normal. The Champagnes I tasted were all compelling and also terrific examples of a house style that emphasizes sustainable farming, low yields and minimal intervention in the cellar. Rich, vinous and full of energy, the Laval Champagnes are some of the most original, deeply personal wines readers will come across.

This is a stellar set of wines from Vincent Laval. Old vines and a non-interventionalist approach in both the vineyards and cellar yield stark, deeply expressive Champagnes that marry density of fruit with the intensely mineral style that is such a signature of Cumières, where all of the vineyards for the top wines are located. This year, the Brut Nature Les Chênes (2014) is especially of note, as is Laval’s newest creation, the 2012 Brut Nature Les Longues Violes. I also tasted a few older Champagnes, and have included notes on those wines here for reference.

Vincent Laval is expanding his range, although production remains tiny, especially by Champagne standards. Readers will note the addition of the Garennes, which becomes the house's entry-level wine. Unfortunately, there is no Rosé release this year. As always, the Laval Champagnes are marked by their intensity and energy, all of which come through low yields and maniacal attention in the field.
