Hayes Family Wines is a relatively new player in the Barossa. They are based on the Estate Vineyard in Stone Well but also act as a negociant, sourcing fruit from a significant number of vineyards. Despite their relatively small size, they work with some certified organic or sustainable vineyards. Retro-modern single vineyard Shiraz and Grenache are the focus with a lo-fi philosophy, including no filtering or fining for red wines and minimal additions with extended skin contact for red wines. I like that Hayes is pushing the boundaries in the Barossa, although the sheer volume of wines must be a logistical nightmare during harvest.

A rising star on the Barossa scene, Hayes Family Wines, run by Brett Hayes with winemaker Andrew Seppelt, owns only a single vineyard in the organically farmed Stonewell planted in the 1940s. They also buy fruit from six highly regarded growers, all batch-fermented thanks to a bank of thirty vessels. Attention to detail is very high across the winery and vineyards, and it shows in a beautifully manicured range of reds made from several Rhône varieties. What Brett Hayes has managed to achieve since 2014 is pretty remarkable.
