These new releases from Stony Hill represent a sort of transition. The 2019s and 2020s were vinified by Stéphane Vivier. Jaimee Motley finished those wines and then made the 2021s before departing after what turned out to be a short tenure. I tasted this range with CEO Carlton McCoy and Reid Griggs, who joined in 2023 to head winemaking. The highlights are, without question, the 2021 Cabernets. Motley was given a bit of fruit from some of the other estates in the Demeine group to experiment with and made the most of that opportunity. Her Linda Falls Cabernet Sauvignon is memorable.

I first met Jaimee Motley through her own wines, so it was great to see what she is up to now that she is running the show at Stony Hill. I only tasted three wines, but they are all quite promising. My feeling is that this historic estate probably needs some work in the vineyard for the wines to reach their potential, but that feels like it is very much within reach.
