In 2010, the engineer and oil magnate Alejandro Bulgheroni got into the wine business. At a cherry farm he owned in the heart of Chubut, he decided to plant what would be the most southerly vineyard in Argentina to date, located at 45º 33’. Thus, Bodega Otronia was born; named after Lake Musters, that in pre-Colombian (indigenous) times was known as Otrón. With the advice of the Italian expert Alberto Antonini and overseen by the oenologist Juan Pablo Murgia, in 2016 they started to make wines at an experimental winery equipped with all the necessary technology; most significantly European oak in large formats. Focusing on whites and sparkling wines, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir make up the bulk of the vineyards; although white grapes also include Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris, while the reds are Merlot and Malbec. The soils are mostly fluvial and lacustrine in origin resulting in a make-up of gravel, clay and sand. The brief summers, with their long days and freezing nights and constant wind, make this a very distinctive terroir in Argentina, the most extreme in Patagonia. They bottle under the brands Otronia and 45º Rugientes.
