Unsurprisingly for those who are familiar with Stangeland Vineyards’ elegant, old-school Pinot Noirs, the 2019 vintage here produced restrained, focused wines that showcase energy over brawn. Larry Miller’s history with Pinot Noir goes back to 1978, when he planted four acres of vines on his Eola-Amity Hills property. Miller began making wine in 1991, and today Strangeland must be one of the most unsung, high-quality wineries in the region. Why? It’s a mystery to me. These wines are far from rustic, and while they tend to be relatively light-bodied, they have never lacked flavor intensity. They’re also extremely well-priced given what’s in the bottle. I have no doubt that Miller’s loyal customers are just fine with the fact that these wines, which are made in small quantities, are still relatively undiscovered.
