This is a positively stellar set of wines from Sinegal Estate. Starting with the 2016s, winemaker Ryan Knoth nailed the vintage. Knoth told me the 2016s took some work to extract, but longer macerations worked beautifully on the wines. Two thousand seventeen was another story altogether. Patience was the key, as the Labor Day heat spikes caused Brix to recede by as much as 2%. Knoth decided to wait another few weeks, as the phenolics were not ready. The estate Cabernet was not brought in until October 3, which was also the last day of the harvest. Even and fast extractions, with shortened macerations, seem to have brought out the purity of the fruit nicely. Two thousand seventeen also sees the first commercial release of a Pinot Noir from a site in Petaluma. Knoth and proprietor David Sinegal cite Burgundy as their inspiration for this wine, but even the biggest, ripest red Burgundies are very far away stylistically from the Sinegal Pinot. Lastly, readers should note that, although all the wines in this range are under the 'Sinegal Estate' brand, only the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon Estate are made entirely from fruit off the estate vineyard in St. Helena.
