Larry Fairchild has made serious strides over the last few years. The wines, which are made by Philippe Melka had improved markedly, while Fairchild continues to add to his vineyard sources. In 2013, Fairchild has a new wine from the Houyi (formerly Chang) Vineyard on Pritchard Hill, while 2014 will see the introduction of a new wine from the Tench Vineyard in Oakville. The 2012s have all come in pretty much as expected. I found the 2013s quite raw and hard to taste. I will not be surprised if those wines blossom over the coming year.

I have been following Fairchild for the last few years. The wines have always been good, but not especially exciting or complex. That changes with 2011, the vintage in which these wines take a big jump up in terms of quality. Proprietor Larry Fairchild makes three Cabernets; the flagship Sigaro from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill, a Georges III, and now a wine from the Las Piedras vineyard in St. Helena that Fairchild has christened Stones No. 1. With the 2013, some small lots were fermented in barrel. It is going to be exciting to see how the wines develop now that Philippe Melka is in charge.
