Proprietor Beth Novak Milliken and her team headed by Winemaker and Vineyard Manager Aron Weinkauf and Assistant Winemaker Landon Donley have done a terrific job with these new and upcoming releases. Nowhere is that more evident than in the 2011s, which are quite impressive, especially considering the vintage. The 2012s are consistent with the year, while the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is shaping up to be another stellar effort. It all starts in the vineyard, though, and this historic St. Helena site is one of the very best.

Spottswoode is one of the great names in Napa Valley. Under the leadership of proprietor Beth Novak Milliken, Spottswoode has been on a roll, especially over the last few years. Aron Weinkauf arrived in 2006 and worked his way up to Winemaker with the 2011 vintage. Weinkauf told me he approached 2011 pretty much like any year, with the exception of dealing with botrytis, which is highly unusual in Napa Valley. There were few, if any, substantial changes in vinification relative to most years. Readers might enjoy this short video with Spottswoode's Aron Weinkauf.
