I was looking forward to the tasting at Antonelli San Marco after last year’s visit. Following the successful 2019 Montefalco Sagrantino, Filippo Antonelli did a fantastic job with the 2019 Montefalco Sagrantino Chiusa di Pannone and Montefalco Sagrantino Molino dell'Attone. These wines harness the power and intensity of the vintage without becoming overbearing, a challenge some Montefalco producers faced in 2019. Both 2019s are utterly classic and built for the cellar. This estate also excels with Montefalco Rosso and Rosso Riserva, using only a blend of Sangiovese, Sagrantino and some Montepulciano. Antonelli supports changing the Montefalco Rosso DOC regulations to permit only indigenous varieties. I can see why Antonelli San Marco is pushing the envelope: his wines are benchmarks of the region. Frankly, it’s hard to go wrong at this estate. The wines overachieve across the board.
