With a cool, late start to the season, 2010 looked good for the early-maturing varieties, said Sean Capiaux. At the veraison, it was necessary to open up the canopy to get more sun on the grapes. "But then we got blistering heat and a lot of sunburn," he told me, "and quantities in 2010 are way down." In fact, he added, two of his sources, the Freestone Hill and Wilson vineyards, had their grapes burned, got way behind in the ripening process, and were then hammered by late rain--"a real triple whammy." Much of this fruit was declassified into his entry-level Chimera bottling. Capiaux also told me that he has eliminated the vineyards that previously brought a eucalyptus quality to the Chimera pinot.

Sean Capiaux is probably best known for the stunning wines he makes at O'Shaughnessy on Howell Mountain. The Pinots he makes for his own label are equally worthy of attention. The wines are made in a bold, juicy style.
