Zöch – bis am Berg
I met young Peter Zöch when he was working the 2015 harvest under Klaus Peter Keller in Rheinhessen, and after tasting a couple of promising wines, I called on him in June 2016 to get a more complete impression. The results were mixed, but there are good reasons to predict a promising future. The Zöch family has been farming sites on the Bisamberg for many generations, and were among those to retain a toehold of vineyards after this sector immediately north of Vienna was devastated by bombs and ground combat in the last months of World War II. When Peter’s parents began estate bottling, they adopted the punning winery name “bis am Berg” (“right up to the mountain”), which nicely captured their continuing intention to concentrate on sites with significant slope, of which the Bisamberg offers many that clearly cry out to be restored. One of the most imposing and steep of these was recently planted by Zöchs with Mosel vine selections courtesy of Klaus Peter Keller.
