Weingut Prinz

Weingut Prinz in Hallgarten started as a hobby for Fred and Sabine Prinz. Fred Prinz studied oenology in Geisenheim and worked for Bernhard Breuer of the famous Georg Breuer estate in Rüdesheim before becoming winemaker at Kloster Eberbach. He made wine from 100 hectares there while producing “just 3,000 to 4,000 bottles at home.” When an estate in his home village of Hallgarten came up for sale in 2004, the Prinz family took over the cellar, and some of the sites and the hobby became their mainstay. Today, they farm 12 hectares, of which 91% are Riesling and 5% Pinot Noir, with the rest split into Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and some PiWis. The vineyards are mostly in Hallgarten, but in 2021, they took over sites from the now-defunct Schloss Schönborn, giving them a parcel each in the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg, the Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen and the Erbacher Marcobrunn. The estate has been certified organic since 2013 and has employed biodynamic methods since 2018, albeit without the certification. Fred Prinz notes that the estate focuses on dry wines and that sweet wines are only made when “nature willingly gives botrytis.” Son Florian Prinz has already joined the estate and works alongside his father.
