Weingut Jean Stodden

Long before any of the other producers on the Ahr had begun to look across the border, Gerhard Stodden had seen Burgundy as his source of inspiration. It took him a while to perfect his style, and for years his wines were unduly austere to the point of being almost bitter in their youth, but few today question that he was the best producer of pinot noir in the region. He died earlier this year at the age of only 64 while jogging in his vineyards. Fortunately for the estate, his son Alexander had already been working with him for a few years, with 2011 being the first vintage that bears his signature. If this is a harbinger of things to come, we can look forward to another generation of stunning wines. These are some of the finest pinot noirs of the vintage produced anywhere in Germany. Although the estate is small and the best bottles are quite expensive, I would counsel any importer wanting to add German pinot noir to their portfolio to take a closer look at this estate.
