Although this estate is known internationally as a pioneer in bringing dry rieslings back to favor, two of the wines from their finest sites, both of which will not be released until next year, did not ferment to complete dryness in 2011. Respecting nature's wishes, and not wanting to artificially heat the cellar or inoculate the casks with cultivated yeasts, Theresa Breuer bottled them as they were: two of the finest off-dry rieslings of the vintage. Even the Berg Rottland, which did complete its sugars, weighed in at only 11.5% alcohol, making it the best of the "lighter" wines that are now so much in demand by those tired of seeing rieslings rise to ever-higher levels of alcohol. Although some might think that Bernhard Breuer would turn over in his grave at the results, I rather imagine that this is exactly what he wanted. He never believed in the human artifice of setting a limit of 9 grams of residual sugar for dry wines, but favored instead the natural expression of each site in the context of its vintage. This is 2011 at its best.
