Weingut Christ

Rainer Christ believes that the high extract born of 2014’s low yields and more-than-ample water supply translates in the best instances to focused, clearly-delineated flavors. Beginning with this vintage, Christ assumed control of the three-decade-old but mere two-hectare Petershof estate and is marketing the resulting wines under the moniker “Petershof by Weingut Christ,” his first to be organically raised, as were those of previous owner and Petershof founder Peter Ullreich. Prompted by consumer interest, his personal proclivity, and the recent declaration of a “DAC Wiener Gemischter Satz,” Christ has been expanding his acreage of field blends, which recently surpassed his estate’s surface area of Grüner Veltliner. Concerning the allowance under that official category for blends across single-cépage blocks, Christ opines that if the DAC is to be utilized for other than genuine field blends, not only ought the parcels in question be contiguous, but they ought also to share very similar terroirs and the grapes should all be harvested on the same day and pressed together, in hope that the result will distinctively reflect its place of origin. (At the time of my most recent, late May visit, Christ preferred not to show me two 2014s that were still in tank: his low-cropped, relatively late-harvested Grüner Veltliner X and his Gemischter Satz Bisamberg from septuagenarian, post-trained vines in the Wiesthalen.)
