### Chile: El Niño Brought a Slow-Motion Season with a Long Harvest Window

When I visited Chile in March, predictions for the year’s vintage were lukewarm. By the middle of the month, when the harvest is usually in full swing, producers in most regions hadn't started picking their grapes, except for the north, where the cycle was accelerated.

While there, I visited various vineyards and tried a few grapes. They had a pristine, bright color—the kind you see just after veraison has finished when they look so good you’re tempted to guzzle them down until the acidity and lack of sugar curb your enthusiasm. In Maipo, Maule and along the Aconcagua coast, I saw remarkably slow ripening across the board. The culprit was clear: the El Niño phenomenon.

**The Year of El Niño**

The 2023-2024 season will be remembered as the year when El Niño – a phenomenon sparked when temperatures in the Pacific Ocean rise over a certain threshold – interfered with temperatures worldwide. This resulted in plenty of hot weather in the northern hemisphere, impacting Chile quite differently. “Counting 2024, I’ve seen three harvests when El Niño was at its most intense,” says Marcelo Papa, the Head Winemaker at Concha y Toro. “I’ve learned that for Chile, at least that means cold, rainy years.”

The winter of 2023 saw rainfall levels recover from previous droughts and then exceed averages. By the spring, the coldest in ten years, soils were saturated with water. Budding came late, while damp weather prevented frosts.

But nature’s generosity often comes at a price. Conditions did not improve, and in December, by the time the first heat waves arrived, viruses had set in vineyards that weren’t properly treated. This is down to more than just the weather. With properties full of wine and a general fall in prices for both wine and grapes, many producers don’t have the extra cash to treat their vines. This affected overall yields, as did the _millerandage_ caused by the cold spring.

Veraison came erratically at the beginning of February, with a variation of as much as two weeks across the Central Valley and in some coastal areas, closer to the middle and end of the month. When I visited the vineyards at that time, there was a general sense that ripening was proceeding extremely slowly.

In some areas of the Central Valley, a couple of heat waves in summer blocked up the plants. Admittedly they weren’t too severe, but “they were enough to bring down the sugar levels in the plants,” says Felipe Tosso at Viña Ventisquero. Many producers by March were getting pretty anxious about how the year would turn out.

### A Precious Window

And yet, from the middle of March onward, a long window of mild to cool temperatures arrived and continued until mid-April, evening up what had been feared to be an ominously imbalanced vintage. Only then did the year’s real work begin.

“We passed through the vineyard thousands of times,” says Andrea León at Clos Apalta. “None of our work in previous years applied in 2024 because each parcel ripened at its own pace; choosing when to harvest was one of the biggest jobs.” So, in addition to the gloomy weather, producers had to wait and agonize over the harvest schedule. Then, decisions about what to do with the grapes when they got to the winery had to be made. Emily Faulconer – who headed up Viña Carmen until last year when she moved to run Errázuriz – puts it vividly: “The tone this year was that if you couldn’t harvest today, you still had a week’s grace to get it done. In 2023, when you thought it was today, it was last week.”

Thanks to the sluggish season and the blocked ripening in the middle of summer, 2024 presents an unusual combination for Chile in which phenolic ripeness kept the same slow pace as the sugar development. This meant wineries could choose the style they wanted to develop with moderate alcohol levels. “It was an effort to get to 25 brix (an alcohol potential of 14.5%), so the bulk of the winery’s output is between 13.5% and 13.7%, without any greenness and very refined fruit,” says Papa.

It’s an ideal balance, especially for those seeking less potent styles for their wines, similar to the 2021 vintage. This is especially true of the Cabernet Sauvignons of Maipo, where accumulated degree days fell by 25% compared to 2023 (a warm year). This will be apparent in the mass-produced wines, which might lack some structure but present transparent fruit flavors.

In that sense, 2024 will be reminiscent of the 2016 vintage (for those harvested before the rains of April in another El Niño year) with delicate, skinny profiles or the wines of 2010, which was quite a Bordelais year for a sunny country. “This harvest reminds me a lot of 2010,” says Andrés Sánchez at Tabontinaja in Maule, “with slow, cool ripening resulting in gentle, polished tannins and precise fruit.”

Now we’re in the middle of May. Some of the producers I spoke to for this report are still finishing harvesting their lethargic Carménères. Marzio Ramírez, the oenologist at Carmín de Peumo, who is in a leading region for the variety, makes no bones about it: “It was a slow year in general and especially for the Carménère, we harvested almost three weeks later than normal, but without greenness, with well-defined fruit and moderate alcohol.”

**Limarí & the North**

North of Santiago, the regions of Coquimbo and Atacama are home to a few viticultural valleys, among which Elqui and Limarí stand out. The former is famous for its labyrinthine ravines running up into the Andes, while Limarí is an open, coastal region. Both are sunny areas, and here, 2024 was extremely dry, with barely any rainfall in winter and reservoirs at historic lows, forcing wineries to take precautionary measures for the 2025 season if conditions don’t improve.

This extreme drought combined with the slightly warmer-than-usual Humboldt Current (up to 1.5 degrees) is an excellent summation of the El Niño effect, that turned the local climate upside down. The winter saw no frosts, meaning that “budding came very early,” says Felipe Muller at Viña Tabalí. We had buds open by early August, and this meant an early harvest in general.” I witnessed this during my visit to the Huasco Valley in Atacama in August 2023.

And yet, the temperatures in spring didn’t rise as much as one might expect. Larger amounts of mist on the coast due to greater evapotranspiration and mild temperatures saw ripening race along. With restrictions on water use limiting production, the phenols developed rapidly, and by the end of January, the grapes on the coast were harvested.

**The Coast**

The experience of Limarí was initially replicated on the Aconcagua Coast, where terroirs such as Casablanca or Leyda specialize in short-cycle varieties. They, too, saw early budding. The vines escaped damaging frosts, but there was some shatter due to the cold spring, and veraison came late and unevenly. “In Casablanca, we didn’t harvest anything until April,” says Alberto Guolo at Casas del Bosque, a little incredulously. “Because we didn’t get any frosts, all the grapes came from primary buds, which makes a big difference for Pinot Noirs.”

There is no official data yet, but government estimates suggest this vintage could see a fall of around 10-15% (the cold climate pushed yields down). This will help prices rise after a drop following the surplus of previous years.

As is true of every year when El Niño rears its head, the wines of Chile will reflect the impact of this phenomenon. The wines of 2024 will likely lack the concentration we usually see in the reds of the Central Valleys but will enjoy the precision of the fruit and a more delicate overall profile. I will have a better idea when I taste the first blends in spring.

**Chile: el Niño trajo una vendimia en cámara lenta con una larga ventana de cosecha**

Visité Chile en marzo de este año. Entonces los pronósticos sobre la vendimia eran reservados. Al promediar marzo, el mes en que la vendimia suele ir a todo vapor, los productores, en la mayoría de las regiones, aún no habían recogido uvas, con la excepción del Norte.

Durante mi viaje visité viñedos y probé uvas. Estaban con un verdor prístino. Del tipo que se percibe cuando termina el envero y uno, al ver las uvas ya pintadas, se tienta y las prueba con entusiasmo hasta que la acidez y la falta de azúcar te cambian el gesto. En Maipo, en Maule, en la costa de Aconcagua, lo que se vivenciaba era una notable demora en la madurez. Había una razón para ello: el fenómeno de El Niño.

**El Año del Niño**

La temporada 2023-2024 será recordada por el fenómeno del Niño – la temperatura del Océano Pacífico supera un umbral hacia arriba– y su magnitud trastoca las temperaturas globales. Si el hemisferio Norte vivió las temperaturas más altas del último tiempo, no es lo que sucede en Chile. “Con esta 2024 llevo ya tres vendimias con el Niño en fase intensa –declara Marcelo Papa, head winemaker de Concha y Toro– y si algo he aprendido es que al menos en Chile son años fríos y lluviosos”.

Esta temporada se recuperaron e incluso superaron los valores de lluvia en el invierno 2023. De modo que la primavera, que fue la más fría de las últimas 10 añadas, partió con los suelos colmados de agua y con una brotación tardía y sin heladas gracias la humedad.

Pero lo que la naturaleza prodiga suele tener un precio. Las condiciones no mejoraron y en diciembre, con las llegadas de los primeros calores, el oídio se hizo sentir en aquellos viñedos que no estaban bien curados. Las razones son más que ambientales: con las bodegas llenas de vino y en una caída general de precios, tanto del vino como de la uva, muchos productores no tuvieron resto para hacer las curaciones necesarias. Afectando en parte los rindes globales a la baja, en conjunto con el corrimiento causado por las bajas temperaturas de primavera.

Con casi dos semanas de desfasaje comparado con años promedios, la pinta llegó con mucha disparidad hacia comienzos de febrero en el Valle Central y en algunos lugares costeros hacia mediados y fines de ese mes. Ahí es cuando visité los viñedos. Y la sensación era la de un profundo parate en la madurez.

En algunas zonas del valle central, dos olas de calor en enero bloquearon las plantas. Nada grave, hay que decir, “pero fueron lo bastante importantes como para que las plantas moderaran el azúcar”, describe Felipe Tosso desde Viña Ventisquero. La suya es la opinión de muchos productores que, para comienzos de marzo estaban más ansiosos que pacientes frente al año.

**Preciosa Ventana**

Desde mediados de marzo, sin embargo, se abrió una larga ventana de temperaturas templadas a frescas que llegó hasta mediados de abril y emparejó lo que hasta ese momento se pronosticaba como una heterogeneidad ominosa sobre la añada. Recién entonces comenzó la verdadera tarea del año.

“Dimos mil vueltas al viñedo”, describe Andrea León desde Clos Apalta. “Nada de lo que hicimos otros años valía para el 2024, porque cada parcela maduró a su ritmo y elegirlas bien fue buena parte del trabajo”, agrega. De modo que a la temporada morosa se sumó el tiempo de espera para pensar y elegir, en el que los productores vivieron un tiempo de agoníia. Emily Faulconer –hasta el año pasado al frente de Viña Carmen y ahora responsable de los vinos de Errázuriz–, lo galvaniza con una comparación: “La tónica de este año fue, si pensabas que la fecha de vendimia era para hoy, todavía podías esperar una semana. El año 2023 si se pensaba que era hoy, es porque había sido la semana pasada”.

Como resultado del año tardío y de los bloqueos en pleno verano, este año ofrece una rara combinación para Chile en la que la madurez fenólica acompañó a la madurez azucarina con el mismo paso pausado. Por consiguiente, cada perfil estilístico pudo ser elegido y desarrollado, con alcoholes moderados. “Nos costó llegar a los 25 brix (un alcohol potencial de 14.5%), de modo que la masa grande en la bodega está entre los 13.5% y 13.7%, sin verdores, con una fruta muy fina”, describe Papa.

Un balance idílico, particularmente para quienes buscan estilos menos enjundiosos de vinos, como los que ocurrieron en la añada 2021. En particular para el Cabernet Sauvignon de Maipo, donde la acumulación de temperaturas marca hasta un 25% menos comparado al 2023 (que fue cálido). Algo que se percibirá en los vinos masivos donde puede faltarle un puntito de estructura, pero con frutas diáfanas.

En ese sentido, la 2024 se parecerá a los vinos de la añada 2016 (cosechados antes de las grandes lluvias de abril de ese año, también año del Niño), con perfiles delicados y delgados, o lo que se degustó de los vinos 2010, años bordeleses para un país solar. “Esta cosecha me recuerda mucho a la 2010 –describe Andrés Sánchez desde Tabontinaja en Maule–, con una madurez pausada y fresca que ofreció taninos suaves, pulidos y frutas precisas”.

Ahora estamos a mediados de mayo. Algunos de los productores con los que hablé para este reporte están terminando la cosecha del tardío Carménère. Marzio Ramírez, enólogo de Carmín de Peumo, en una zona de referencia para la variedad, lo pone blanco sobre negro: “Fue un año tardío en general y en particular para el Carménère, nosotros cosechamos casi tres semanas más tarde, pero sin verdor, con frutas definidas y grados moderados”, describe.

**Limarí & Norte**

Al norte de Santiago, las regiones de Coquimbo y Atacama albergan algunos valles vitícolas, entre los que destaca Elqui y Limarí. Si el primero es famoso por su laberinto de quebradas hacia Los Andes, Limarí es una región abierta y costera. Ambos son solares. Aquí el año 2024 fue extremadamente seco, casi sin precipitaciones en invierno y con los diques y represas en el límite histórico, lo que obligará a las bodegas a tomar medidas de contención para la añada 2025, si no cambian las condiciones.

Esa sequedad extrema, sumada a una corriente de Humboldt ligeramente más cálida (hasta 1.5 grados) que precisamente define al fenómeno de El Niño, invirtieron la climatología de la región. El invierno no presentó heladas. En ese contexto, “la brotación fue muy temprana y teníamos yemas abiertas a comienzos de agosto y ese efecto adelantó la cosecha en general”, describe Felipe Muller desde Viña Tabalí. Algo que comprobé en mi visita al valle de Huasco, Atacama, en agosto de 2023.

Sin embargo, las temperaturas primaverales no escalaron. Mayor nubosidad costera debido a la mayor evapotranspiración, con temperaturas moderadas llevaron la madurez a velocidad crucero. Con restricciones hídricas presionando a la baja la producción, la fenología se adelantó y para fines de enero las uvas costeras estaban cosechadas.

**La Costa**

El efecto vivido en Limarí se replicó en la costa de Aconcagua, donde terroirs como Casablanca o Leyda se especializan en variedades de ciclo más corto y también sufrieron una brotación algo adelantada. Sin heladas que dañaran las vides, pero sí con corrimiento debido a una primavera muy fría, el envero llegó tarde y desparejo. “En Casablanca no cosechamos nada hasta abril”, describe Alberto Guolo desde Casas del Bosque, no sin sorpresa. “Como no tuvimos heladas, toda la uva proviene de las yemas primarias y eso hace una gran diferencia en Pinot Noir”, define.

Aún sin datos oficiales, las estimaciones gubernamentales ofrecen un panorama en torno de 10 o 15% a la baja respecto de un año promedio. Esta merma, sin embargo, puede ayudar a subir el precio de los vinos en general en medio de una crisis de sobreoferta.

Como cada año en que se declara El Niño, los vinos acusarán su recibo en Chile. Si se cumplen los pronósticos de los productores, de los vinos 2024 carecerán de la concentración típica de los tintos en el Valle Centrales, pero ofrecerán precisión de fruta y balance más delicado. En todo caso, la cuenta quedará clara a la hora de los cortes en primavera.
