Tiezzi
In 2001, the Tiezzi Brunello di Montalcino was sourced from the same five vineyard locations as today's “Poggio Cerino”. These vineyards are located in the northeast of Montalcino at an average of 340 meters in elevation. At the time, the vines were only twenty-five years old, while today they are forty-five. All the other changes since 2001 have taken place in the winery, replacing concrete fermentation tanks with 50-hectoliter truncated-conical vats of Slavonian oak. Fermentation still remains as it was, through spontaneous, ambient yeasts. Two thousand one spent the first two years in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, contrary to today's four years. Then it was moved to the winery's new cellar to mature for the last two years in new barrels. This makes the 2001 a unique expression from Tiezzi. Bottling was also manual in those days, and corks were applied by hand.
