Fritz Miesbauer and his team, including new cellarmaster Peter Rethaller, have scored an improbable and exciting success with their latest collection, far and away the best I have experienced from this estate since Miesbauer took over in 2006. Stift Göttweig’s vineyards were largely spared the hail that savaged those of sister estate Stadt Krems on the Danube’s opposite shore, so that even allowing for the selectivity required at harvest to achieve quality, 2014 production at Stift Göttweig is not far below the estate’s norm. Picking largely began in mid-October. Miesbauer and Rethaller utilized skin contact in tandem with tartrate precipitation to ameliorate the high vintage acids, then let their two top wines enjoy a longer-than-usual stay on the lees.
