Reinhard & Beate Knebel

Sadly, I too often find myself without time to visit the extraordinarily steep and geologically diverse terraces near the intersection of Mosel and Rhine. The best wines here are uniquely satisfying. Among the early proponents of dry wines in this area, the Knebels have achieved-in just over a decade-a reputation as one of the top Mosel addresses. The dry wines in these terraces (especially Uhlen) and at this address tend toward low acidity and high alcohol, and both of these characteristics were accentuated in 2003. Yet the dry 2003s here were impressive and by no means mineral-deficient, while the nobly sweet selections were as good as any in the lower reaches of the Mosel. "You really had to have patience this year," says Beate Knebel, "and be both willing and able to hold off picking. There was rain in September from which the riesling could benefit. " "Despite the rain, though," adds Reinhard Knebel, "there was not much botrytis this year because it was so dry both before and after.
