Novaia
Novaia is now run by the fourth generation of the Vaona family with siblings Marcello and Cristina, who have converted the vineyards to organic agriculture. The estate began the converting process in 2011 and in 2014 was officially certified as an organic grape grower. Novaia’s name derives from nuova aia, meaning a new installment or holding in the area. The Vaona family has been a landowner since the 19th century. While the Vaonas made wine already back then, family difficulties (the untimely death of one of the men in the family) led the estate to stop winemaking for a brief spell in the mid-twentieth century limiting itself only to grape-growing. However, the estate began producing wine again in 1973 (hence the name “Novaia", a new installment or start) and has never looked back. I always find the Amarones made here to be especially bright, accessible and refined and it was no different with this year’s releases.
