North Valley Vineyards

The 2014 vintage was definitely a warm one, winemaker James Cahill told me, “but the wines can also have the structure and energy” that are often lacking in most hot years. That required careful attention in the vineyards as well as crop thinning, since Mother Nature “was extremely generous for fruit, even to a fault.” Cahill, who is also assistant winemaker at Soter, launched this winery with Tony Soter and general manager Brian Sypher, who is also GM at Soter, with the 2012 vintage, and they are off to a fast and very positive start. Unsurprisingly, the wines’ Soter bloodline is clear to see, or rather taste, but in comparison to the Soter wines I find these to be more forward, with more overt fruit expression than their siblings. The ‘13s here were a great success and this set of 2014s is also highly impressive, placing the winery in the top level of the Willamette Valley, with pricing that is quite reasonable given the quality delivered.
