Nik Weis

Nik Weis delivered a stonking collection of 2023 wines, running the full gamut of Riesling styles. Weis continues to hone and chisel the house style. In 2023, this was evident in the uncommon brilliance that defines all the wines, from dry to sweet. Weis notes that rain and high temperatures made life difficult, which in some sites meant waiting for ripeness while rot advanced. He explains, “For us, the focus is on dry wines, with some nobly sweet treasures, but in 2023, because some good botrytis appeared toward the end of harvest, we indeed picked TBAs in the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen and the Ockfener Bockstein [both of which are still fermenting]. So, there are many wines but at low volumes.” Weis sums up that, in the end, they overcame the difficulties through sorting, but it was “not a great year for the volume of dry wines.” While he lost 50% of the Bockstein crop due to sorting, an almost full yield could be picked in the Laurentiuslay. Readers should note that there will be a 2023 Saarfeilser GG, but it was still fermenting during my visit and I did not taste it.
