Matthias Feiden
This young grower, about whom details can be found in my previous report on his 2015 Pinot, works full-time for another Winningen winery but also remains involved in the operation of Rebecca Materne and [Feiden’s life partner] Janina Schmitt. Until the 2017 vintage, Feiden bottled just one wine under his name, a Pinot Noir from Winninger Domgarten of which the inaugural vintage was 2014. The word-play in his wine’s nickname harkens back to those beginnings, when in lieu of enough wine to fill – much less top off – an old barrique, Feiden resorted to gradually dropping in glass marbles. With the 2017 vintage, he split his production into two bottlings, reflecting the acquisition of additional Domgarten vines – but I tasted only the (now village-designated) bottling from his best.
