Matthias Feiden

Young Tobias Feiden, who also collaborates with his significant other Rebecca Materne at Materne & Schmitt (similarly profiled in this report), worked for several years at Knebel and is now full-time at the von Canal winery, also in Winningen. Feiden’s passion is Pinot Noir, in which he has such wisely chosen stylistic models as the Markgräflerland’s Hans-Peter Ziereisen (in my estimation easily among Germany’s top half-dozen Pinot producers). The mature vines he is tending high up in Winningen’s Domgarten seem phenotypically unpromising, but he has managed to coax from them a wine of remarkable potential, and a promising though younger parcel has come on line with 2017. (I happened to visit the day of the mid-September 2017 harvest.)
