Martin Muthenthaler

I was more than a little chagrined when Martin Muthenthaler – whom I know as an intense, proud but very friendly guy – refused to grant me a September 2017 appointment. “Look, I was really wiped out by the frost and have absolutely no wine left,” he wrote by way of explanation, and I sensed trauma still lingering between the lines. By remarkable happenstance, a year later – in fact, on the night before I was to meet with him to taste his 2017s (about which I shall write in my next report) – I dined at a Vienna wine bar named Heunisch & Erben (“Heunisch and its descendants”) that features an incredibly comprehensive and vintage-deep wine list... and a Muthenthaler 2014 by the glass, on which I report below. (For details concerning this estate’s vineyards, practices and recent history, readers are invited to consult the extended introduction to my report on its 2013s.)
